Yarn along - So far so good.

Yey, the illusive yarn along button has agreed to join me again this week, so this means I'm linking up with Ginny.
A few days ago I cast on an 'aestlight' shawl, and believe it or not, this is a stash buster!  A friend of mine, who knitted for a shop in Paris for many years, recently came to stay and brought me a big bag of stash.  In amongst the lone balls was enough yarn to make myself a shawl.  We've been invited to a wedding in June so I though that a shawl would be just the order of the day, now all I have to do is to find a dress to put under it!

So far so good, it starts from a point and increases by making a stitch with a yarn over at the beginning of each row, which causes a loop.  I have read ahead slightly and am thus seeking a little advice before proceeding. The pattern states to 'pick up from front to back, 60 loops down to the point of the triangle and then another 60 loops up the other side (do not knit any of these sts yet)'  does this 'pick up' mean just sliding the needle through the loops, front to back?  It sounds pretty self explanatory but I'd just like to be sure.  The shawl edging looks so fancy that I'm sort of expecting it to be complicated.
?
As you can see I'm reading the Bible.  I'm reading it as one would a book - cover to cover.  'The MacArthur Daily Bible' was gifted to me from Linda over at Prairie Flower Farm, and recommends reading 1 chapter of the Old Testament, 1 chapter of the New Testament, a Psalm and a Proverb daily to read the entire book in one year.  So far so good; I have many many questions and queries, which I am duly noting with a hope that they will be explained later, on further reading!  Although I don't particularly want to ask these questions to anyone, I am finding 'The Reason for God' quite helpful.  Written by Timothy Keller, who is a pastor, it none the less offers objective arguments to many of my questions, and tackles them from angles that I might not have considered through my own reasoning.

  2. How nice to be gifted such a lovely gift!
I think you are reading the pattern correctly, at least that is what I would do, but I know there are some very talented knitter's out there who can tell you for sure.
I am looking forward to seeing your finished shawl Emma. I have a wedding to attend in October and have yet to decide on an outfit.

  3. I have been trying to read the Bible cover to cover this year, it has been going pretty well. I have done it a few other times in my life, and find that when I read through there are always many things that come to mind that I hadn't thought of before.

  4. Typically when you pick up stitches you would pull the yarn through. That being said, since it says pick up loops, I would just put the loops on the needle ready to knit later :)
    It looks lovely though!

  6. Ohhh what a good idea! We have a wedding in May to go to and although I haven't got an outfit yet I like the idea of knitting up a shawl for it! I can't help you with the pattern though as I'd be asking for advice as well! It's a gorgeous yarn you chose for it!

  7. Yes, you are picking up exactly right according to the pattern! So many times I've done what you are doing---making the shawl and THEN looking for the dress!!! Nice neutral color--you should be able to find something lovely to go with it!!!

  9. Emma, I am a member of the PCA (Presbyterian Church in America) - the same denomination as Tim Keller. I have not read that book, but have hear it quoted often. He is, by all accounts, (and I know people who know him personally), an excellent teacher. I hope that this book will answer many of your questions. Have you read CS Lewis?
Oh, and, usually when I pick them up, I knit them. No disasters yet, though I am never sure that that is what I had to do :)

  10. I also read the MacArthur Daily Bible and have for years. I think there will be lots of answers to your questions in the notes alone. I have it on my iPad, too! Tim Keller is an excellent author and teacher. My grown daughters love him, too. And...to top things off I am knitting the Aestlight shawl too. WOW do we have a lot of things in common today. And yes, you do pick up the loops exactly as you have shown without knitting them - but, I'm wondering if it is back to front so that they won't be twisted. I'll have to check. Does the pattern specify?

  15. A knitted shawl for a wedding is the most appropriate item possible I think. And what a lovely color!
I have often picked up my bible and done some reading here and there but somehow I feel like I really have to talk about what I read, so I would love something like a reading club for the bible.

  16. You said the magic phrase - Stashbuster. I will definitely check that one out. I have attempted to read the bible from cover to cover but never seem to finish. The way you are going about it is great.

  18. love that you are using up your stash! That is one of my new year's resolutions, yet I keep casting on for projects that I need new yarn for. I need to knit something really random with whatever I have!

  19. Hi Emma! So nice visiting with you and seeing your lovely projects and creativity!

Great that you are reading through the Bible. The Tim Keller book rings a bell but can't remember where I heard about it. I think it is a book I would like to read. I have a link on my blog (on the top right sidebar) to daily (audio) reading of the Bible. It is a little old/new testament and psalms/proverbs and it takes about 12-15 minutes each day.

    Looking forward to visiting again!
    Kindly, Lorraine

  20. When I pick up stitches, I general just put the needle through. If I have to pick up stitches from a new section (say along the collar of a sweater), then I do pull through yarn, but I don't knit the yarn. Does this make sense?

Hugs from my farm to your home,
