his first night home the kids set up camp down stairs with him. Needless to say during the night he left the solitude of his cushion and snuggled down in between the boys.

self service in the garage!

the boys are loving him

he's having a blast in the snow!

but wait there's more...

some friends of ours, in the next village over, have Juno, Ringo's sister!

Yarn Along

Another two hats finished, just in time as the cold weather is upon us.
I've been having a flurry of hat making of late so with all the oddments of left over yarn I made some thing for myself

Still plugging along on my fern scarf.  Just finished the first 50g ball and it is measuring in at 110cm (unblocked).

The pattern suggests using approximately 60g so I'm way closer to the finish than to the start!
Which is more than I can say for my Whole30.
30 days of eating only meat, fish, seafood, fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds
no
grains - gluten, sugar (honey or maple syrup!), legumes, dairy or alcohol!
and reading the accompanying book It Starts With Food.   Probably should have read the book first but never the less things are going fairly smoothly,  says she on day 9!!!
I'm determined to stick it out for the 30 days but after which I will definitely be re-introducing certain grains - (trying to stay clear of gluten)- and legumes back into my diet.  Not particularly missing dairy.
The book is very well written and explains quite scientific concepts in lay-mans terms, with it's arguments in favor of a Paleo based diet being very convincing.  Food for though indeed but too strict for me - christmas is coming and I want my mince pies and sherry.
 Also throughly enjoying another great read from Barbara Kingsolver:

THE POISONWOOD BIBLE is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture -- is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Slow Living Essentials - October

Linking up with Christine for Slow Living Essentils - October 2013

"The north wind blows and you shall have snow", but thankfully the south wind came, and melted it all again!
The chicken ladies were none to amused but the little people got stuck right in.

{Nourish}
Despite the snow we are still enjoying the fruits of our labors.  The potatoes and squash are up and the carrots, leeks, kale and beets are as ever unfazed by the cold white stuff.  The cabbages are safe and warm inside a wee deer!  We couldn't believe the hide of him, one day he just swaggered up to the garden, in plain daylight, looked us over and tucked in!!
Didn't get the last of the corn though, that was for Titi

{Prepare}
I'm so enjoying having a freezer at last.  Apart from jams and chutneys I've never been one for canning.  I don't have a pressure canner and my last attempt at processing dilly beans in the pressure cooker involved me dropping two big jars.
I have been making lots of fruit sauces and freezing batches of them.  Also made a mammoth pan of Bortch and have frozen half of it.  I love this dish but it takes so long to make.

Also I've been slow roasting tomatoes with garlic and herbs and freezing them as well.  I've already defrosted one bag to see how they taste reheated - they were thick, sticky and sweet, Yum!
The chaps are still chopping and stacking wood, something which Rémi enjoys immensely.

{Reduce}
With a lot of help from Rémi we turned this old bit of furniture (the manufactures stamp in the draw says 1951) into my new sewing table.  Richard picked it up years ago when a local hotel had a clear out and it's been sitting amongst 'junk' at his parents house ever since.  I figure I will get more sewing done if I can leave my machine out.  Up until now I have been using the kitchen table and then packing my machine away in it's box after use.

{Grow}
Pretty much done on the garden front. We are planning on decorating some terracotta pots and planting Jacinthe bulbs in them to give as christmas presents.
Going to plant some crocus and tulips in window boxes to brighten up the spring (what little of it we get)

{Create}
Lots going on here.  We celebrated Tino's 5th birthday with a Sponge Bob cake and home made candles...

We've also been doing lots of autumn activities - making leaf prints in autumn colored play dough, leaf  door/window art and leaf dipping in beeswax.

{Discover}
As ever I am still bordering on computer illiterate.  For some reason my yahoo mail account bugged and shut down our computer every time I tried to open it.  My paypal account and my telephone then decided they didn't like their respective passwords and thus slammed their 'virtual' doors in my face.   After three weeks of being AWOL my yahoo account is back, no explanations to it's absence, and is up and running quicker than ever.  I called paypal in a panic thinking someone had pirated my life and was holidaying in the Bahamas at my expense but everything was in order!   I really don't like being dependent on things that I don't understand.

{Enhance}
This month I joined my s.i.l and 100 or so other volunteers in helping out at the Trail des Aiguilles Rouge  For our part we were up at 4am and providing pre-race hot drinks and snacks to the runners.

{Enjoy}

We started the month with snow but finished it in the sun of San Lorenzo al Mare on the Italian riviera.  The boys enjoyed being at the beach again and we spent a fantastic - worth every penny of the entrance fee - day at the Oceanographic Museum  in Monte Carlo, Monaco (but that's the subject of a whole other post)!
This was also second time the boys celebrated Halloween.  It's not really done here in France but last year we were in the UK so they went trick or treating.
The little village of San Lorenzo had decorated it's narrow arched-covered-cobble stone streets with all manner of ghostly things and all the cast of Scooby Doo!!
The kids were then treated to a Halloween buffet of fruit, pizza, spinach pie, cookies and blood (which I suspect was red Fanta!).

So how was your October?  Are you slipping on layers of fleece or slathering on the sun cream?

Yarn Along - A Hat-trick

Not only did this knit up super quick, was an easy pattern to follow (and adaptable for different size heads) but he is actually wearing it!!  Even had to point out to him that people don't generally wear hats with PJ's!!
There is another, hot on the needles, for little bro.  I picked up this green Patagonia all-in-one ski suit at the school jumble sale a few weeks ago for 10€, and I think his hat will look rather dandy with it!

Also made this Pumpkin Hat during the week for a little friend of Tino who was celebrating her 5th birthday.

Still reading Simplicity Parenting and had an experience in 'simplifying' my own affairs this week.   For the past ten days or so my yahoo email account has been causing havoc on my computer.  Each time I signed in it systematically shut down my internet connection, and flashed up a security alert.  However everything else on the computer worked just fine.  I tried opening another yahoo account with a new user name and pass word but the same 'shut down' happened.  I have now opened a gmail account and things are working as they should be, it's just that I don't have any of my old contacts or folders and I can't remember all of the blogs that I followed by internet subscription -  I pretty much agree with all that Simplicity Parenting has to say about 'less is more', but in this case 'less is definitely not more'!
AND just this afternoon, I discovered that my paypal password is not working.  Is it possible to get some kind of virus that attaches itself to one person on a shared computer?   Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yarn Along - Fire Truck

Finished blocking Tino's Fire Truck Sweater last night and this morning he wore it to school.

He told me he's going to wear it everyday!! I love that he loves it, and will speed wash it so he can wear it 'daily', as in a few months it's going to be too small.  I think it fits just right/bordering on snug!!
This was my first time working with the Intarsia method of color work, where each color change has it's own separate 'bobbin' of yarn...

necessity being the mother of invention I used elastic bands as bobbins (no yarn shop for miles and fed up paying postage when buying online).  Intarsia works great for big blocks of color but it's mighty fiddly on small color changes like the runs of the ladder.  I can't keep things from you good yarn along ladies, so I'll own up - I cheated on the fiddly parts and used the Fair Isle technique.  Phew, I feel much better now that I've come clean!
Still rippling away and have just cast-on a grey and yellow stripped beanie for Rémi (to match his ski jkt no less)

Reading Simplicity Parenting on my kindle into the wee small hours (don't need the lights on so hubby doesn't whine about being kept awake!).  This is a fantastic book and follows on perfectly from Last Child In The Woods which I just recently finished.
Linking up with Ginny for Yarn Along.  It's our tenth wedding anniversary today and we shall be spending the evening watching Rémi play ice hockey, but I'm sure we'll find a moment to pop in the bar for a glass of bubbly (two perhaps if his team wins!).
What are you knitting, reading or celebrating today?

Slow Living Essentials - September

Linking up with Christine for Slow Living Essentials - September
"Join me as I reflect over the past month and various achievements I have made along the way as I strive to lead a more conscious, slower life.  As always, you are very welcome to join in - just leave a link to your own blog post at the bottom of this page and enjoy sharing your reflections with like minded people. Have a great October out there, everyone!"

{Nourish}
Trying to make as many of the after school snacks as I can.   I like muffins, they are so quick and easy, and it's so simple to vary the flavors.
Blueberry
{Prepare}
The temperatures have dropped here so I'm enjoying cooking up big pots of stews and soups.  My old and faithful pot has taken retirement as her one remaining handle looks set to break at any time she's full of hot liquid and I've treated myself to a lovely new cast-iron one, in red!
Moroccan Couscous
There has also been some serious jamming going on around here - red & black currant, apricot & vanilla and rhubarb & ginger...

... and of the savory kind - mint & almond pesto

{Reduce}
I've made the decision to take apart my 'shalom'!  I think I've only ever worn it twice since making it as it's just not comfortable.  I payed quite a bit for the Noro yarn so it seems a waste to have it sitting in the closet. I'm planning on making this with it.
so long shalom!!  you just don't fit right!
{Green}
Found a great borax free washing powder recipe over on My Healthy Green Family and have been using it for the past month without complaint.  Previously I had make laundry detergent with borax which I had to buy online.  The postage was the same price as the borax, making the whole enterprise more expensive than organic store bought detergent. I have also been soaking lemons rinds in white vinegar for 3 weeks then cutting the infused mix half and half with pure white vinegar and a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil, as an all purpose cleaner.
{Grow}
For the first time since we built the house ten years ago, a tree just beside the chicken coop, produced fruit.
The hens (which we got this spring) often scratch and peck (and I guess poo) around the base of it, could there be a link?  I was a bit wary as to wether the fruits were edible at first but the kids told me not to worry they'd been eating them for days!!!
Our other plum trees produced delicious fruit also
{Create}
Making good progress on Tino's Fire Truck Sweater, using for the first time, the Intarsia technique for the color work.

{Discover}
In my last Slow Living Essentials post I extolled the virtues of my new toy - Kindle, but it has also revealed a 'dark' side of myself which i didn't think existed - Impulse Buying!!! Normally I procrastinate for weeks before actually purchasing something and nine times out of ten I talk myself out of wanting it altogether.  But this instant download thing, got me hook line and sinker.  I now have 17 books on my Kindle, bought in the space of three months!
{Enhance}
Maybe this should come under {Prepare} but wood stacking seems so much more than just preparing for the winter.  I took my camera for a stroll around the village last week just to take pictures of wood piles!! I love the care and attention that people put into staking their wood, it's feels like some kind of last, ultimate reverence to this precious gift before burning it.

{Enjoy}
The little people went back to school at the beginning of the month so I've been enjoying some slightly more challenging hikes with Richard.  We did quite a few easy hikes with the boys this summer, and we were glad to see they enjoyed the activity as much as we do.  This is something we plan on doing a lot more of together in the future.

Looking forward to reading what you've been up to in September.
